Absence

Regular school attendance brings enormous benefits to individual pupils, their families, schools and the community as a whole. Without regular attendance, levels of attainment suffer and opportunities are missed to obtain maximum benefit from education.

Persistent absence and lateness will affect a child’s achievement and progress in school. Comprehensive research shows that there is a direct link between a child’s level of school attendance and their level of school attainment.

As a parent it is your legal responsibility to ensure your child receives a suitable full-time education. It is your responsibility that your child attends school each day and is on time.

Children with attendance less than 96% are identified as a concern if absences are unauthorised.

Absence

We keep a record of your child's attendance in school therefore if he/she is not well or has an unavoidable medical appointment please contact the school on 01962 869496 and speak to a member of staff or leave a message. You will also need to write a letter explaining their absence on their return to school. Alternatively you can email admin@oliversb.com.

Medical Appointments/Late Children

Being on time:

  • School gates open at 8:40 am.
  • Gets your day off to a good start and puts you in a positive frame of mind.
  • Sets positive patterns for the future.
  • Leads to a good attendance record and means you don’t miss any morning notices.
  • Leads to better achievement because you attend the WHOLE of all of your classes.
  • Leads to understanding that school is important and education is valuable.
  • Helps you develop a sense of responsibility for yourself and towards others
  • Is respectful to your teacher and to your classmates and builds good habits for later in life.
What happens if a pupil is late?

All lateness is recorded and reported on your child’s attendance certificate. Persistent late arrivals will be required to meet with Mrs Bordoli and Mrs King and may result in Local Authority action.

Some things that help:

Help your child get everything ready the night before (e.g. PE kit, school uniform)

  • Allowing plenty of time to get to school
  • Make arrangements with neighbours, family or friends if you have problems getting your child to school.
  • Make sure your child has breakfast or arrives at school in time for breakfast club.
  • Help your child organise homework.
  • Establish a good bedtime routine
  • Make sure your child gets enough rest and is not distracted by too much time on the computer or watching TV.
  • Setting an alarm clock!

If you need to take your child out of school for a medical appointment please ensure you sign him/her in and out at the main office. Likewise, if your child is late for school he/she must come to the main reception. This is for safety reasons as we need to have children registered in the case of a fire drill or emergency. If your child is going to arrive late and would like a school lunch please telephone the office by 9.30am to place the order.
